HAMM Compaction Quality
HCQ is short for “Hamm Compaction Quality”. Hamm has coined this term to describe a comprehensive range of products for planning, measuring, controlling, documenting and analysing compaction processes. The complete system is of modular design, and the individual products have been perfectly matched to one another. HCQ products enable construction companies to meet even increased requirements on quality and economic efficiency, their modular design offering maximum flexibility at the same time.

HCM: Hamm Compaction Meter
The HCM is used to measure and indicate ground stiffness when compacting soils or asphalt pavements.
What is measured and displayed?
Compaction always aims to increase the bearing capacity of the ground being compacted, with stiffness being one of the most important indicators for bearing capacity. The HCM (Hamm Compaction Meter) measures the stiffness of the soil or asphalt pavement during the dynamic compaction process. The measured result is then displayed on the control panel as the so-called HMV value (Hamm measurement value).
The HMV value provides an indication of the degree of compaction achieved. It informs the driver of whether further compaction of the ground is required, in this way minimizing the number of passes and preventing excess compaction.
How is the measurement performed?
The HCM comprises a sensor installed at the drum, processor and display. The sensor measures the vertical acceleration of the drum. The processor calculates the HMV value from these measured signals, transmitting the result to the display installed on the operator’s platform.
What rollers are suitable for use with the HCM?
The HCM can be used with all rollers using dynamic vibratory compaction. In the single-drum compactors (3000 series and H series) and the tandem rollers of the HD series, the results are indicated via a standard round dial. In the tandem rollers of the DV, HD+ and HD+i series, the HMV value is indicated as a bar on the control panel display.
HTM: HAMM Temperature Meter
The HTM module is used to measure and indicate the surface temperature of the asphalt pavement to be compacted. It is only used in asphalt compaction.
What is measured?
Asphalt temperature plays an important role when compacting asphalt pavements. The HTM module (HAMM Temperature Meter) keeps the operator informed of the current asphalt temperature. This information enables the driver to decide whether and how to compact the asphalt pavement. It helps to prevent damages such as asphalt heaving caused by compaction when asphalt temperatures are too high, or destruction of the asphalt matrix caused by vibratory compaction when temperatures are too low.
In addition, the operator can estimate the degree of compaction achieved by combining the temperature and HMV value.
How is the measurement performed?
An infrared temperature sensor in the cross member of the drum measures the asphalt surface temperature at a distance of approx. 1 m from the front drum while the roller keeps moving forward.
What rollers are suitable for use with the HTM module?
The HTM module can be used with all tandem and pneumatic-tyred rollers. The GRW pneumatic-tyred rollers and tandem rollers of the DV, HD+ and HD+i series can be fitted with one sensor at the front drum / axle and a second temperature sensor at the rear drum or axle respectively.
HCQ Navigator
The HCQ Navigator is a satellite-based documentation system for the detection and readout of all important compaction parameters and compaction progress of one or several rollers. It is used in both earthworks and asphalt compaction.
What is measured?
During compaction, the HCQ Navigator creates a real-time “compaction map” of the area to be compacted which enables the roller driver to immediately identify those areas that have been sufficiently compacted as well as those areas that require further compaction. The driver is thus informed of the state of the entire area to be compacted, which ensures an efficient and homogeneous compaction.
How is the measurement performed?
The HCQ Navigator uses DGNSS receivers to trace the current position of each roller. Different data from the compaction process are measured at the same time. The HCQ Navigator then combines the measured values with the position data to generate a real-time “compaction map” of the area to be compacted. If several rollers are used in a team, they can easily be networked via W-LAN, thus keeping the drivers informed, via the screens of their panel PCs on the operator’s platform, where and to what degree the pavement has been compacted by the team of rollers involved.
In addition, all data are recorded by the panel PC and are available for analysis and documentation at a later date.
What rollers are suitable for use with the HCQ Navigator?
The HCQ Navigator is suitable for use with all state-of-the-art Hamm rollers and single-drum compactors. It can be installed ex-factory in every Hamm roller, from single-drum compactor via tandem roller to static roller, and can be retrofitted in the majority of existing Hamm machines. The main components (panel PC and satellite receiver) can easily be swapped between machines pre-installed with the HCQ Navigator – a feature that significantly reduces investment costs and allows successive integration of the system into the machine fleet.
What are the individual components of the HCQ Navigator?
The HCQ Navigator is a modular system comprising the following basic components:
- Pre-installation in the machine
- DGNSS receiver on the roof
- W-LAN antennas
- Panel PC (including software in Asphalt, Earthworks or Premium version) on the operator’s platform
- USB stick for data backup
- Hard-sided case
The system can be expanded by means of the following components:
- Country-specific licences for highly precise positioning data
- Ground station
- DGNSS receiver with wireless modem for use of the ground station
The components listed above can be used in all state-of-the-art Hamm rollers. Except for the pre-installation kit, they are not restricted for use with a specific machine. This feature enables them to be easily swapped between different pre-installed machines.
What are the key benefits?
The HCQ Navigator increases efficiency and improves the quality of roads and earth structures as the system:
- enables reliable adherence to compaction requirements or recommendations;
- prevents excess or insufficient compaction;
- enables compaction to be performed homogeneously and therefore at high quality;
- enables temperature requirements in asphalt compaction to be adhered to without difficulty;
- increases efficiency by avoiding unnecessary roller passes;
- enables continuous dynamic compaction documentation to be performed; and
- enables companies to identify hidden potentials in the process and to train roller operators.
What is the difference between the “Asphalt”, “Earthworks” and “Premium” variants?
- The “Earthworks” variant of the HCQ Navigator includes all sensors and measuring values relevant for the compaction of soils.
- The “Asphalt” variant of the HCQ Navigator includes all sensors and measuring values relevant for the compaction of asphalt surfaces.
- The “Premium” variant of the HCQ Navigator can be used in earthworks or asphalt mode, meaning that it is suitable for use in all applications.
What is different for the roller driver?
Roller drivers enjoy the HCQ Navigator as it makes their work a lot easier. During operation, the panel PC informs them of the compaction progress achieved on coloured maps and in real time. The system allows them to choose the information to be displayed, such as the number of roller passes, temperature, compaction or changes in compaction. Additional information, such as previously imported site plans or guides can be displayed as a navigation aid. It is also possible to display two maps next to one another. When doing so, the information is still displayed in a clearly structured fashion because user-friendly handling is Hamm’s main priority.
+ Pre-installation
Pre-installation of the HCQ Navigator enables smooth integration of the system into the compaction process. As a main feature in addition to the mechanical mounts for the panel PC and W-LAN antenna, it offers an “electronic nameplate”: the software automatically recognizes the machine it is used with and takes account of all specific machine characteristics. This enables the system to evaluate each drum or axle separately and to detect special features, such as staggered compaction (crab mode), while dispensing with time-consuming and error-prone keying in of the machine parameters. +
+ Panel PC
The mobile panel PC is used to configure, display and save all measured data. It can also be used to define user-specific projects or layers, for example, to document the compaction of soils in separate layers. In addition, the measured data can easily be analysed at a later date. The panel PC is mounted on the operator’s platform quickly and easily via a fastening device. Operation is effected via the touchscreen. With its extreme robust design as well as protection class IP67 the PC is resistant to water, dust and vibrations. Thus it is also ideally suited for use in tough job site conditions or with rollers not equipped with a cab.
The panel PC enables the driver to view two different parameters at
the same time, such as the number of roller passes and the temperature.
+ DGNSS receiver
To determine the machine’s position, the HCQ Navigator uses a DGNSS
receiver (DGNSS = Differential Global Navigation Satellite System) which
is mounted on the roof of the roller quite simply by means of magnetic
feet. Using free satellite signals, these receivers provide a horizontal
positional accuracy of no less than 0.90 m. Hamm uses special DGNSS
receivers in the HCQ Navigator which evaluate the signals of the
American GPS and Russian GLONASS navigation systems.
This increases the
number of satellite signals available for evaluation on the one hand
while enabling accurate position determination around the globe on the
other
The system stores the position data for up to 16 hours after
the end of work. This feature dispenses with any idle times incurred by
having to determine the position once again, for example, prior to
commencing work in the morning.
Yet another extremely helpful feature
is bridging any silent zones. The system remains active even when, for a
short time, no satellite positioning signals are available as may be
the case when compacting under bridges. Bridging is performed by the
internal sensor system and software.
The DGNSS receiver is mounted on the cabin roof securely by means
of magnetic feet that enable it to be attached and removed in no time at
all.
+ Hard-sided case
To round out the overall concept of modularity and flexibility, Hamm
offers a robust hard-sided case for storage of the main components of
the HCQ Navigator. The case is dustproof and waterproof, enabling safe
and easy transport of the high-quality components from one job site to
the next.
The hard-sided case effectively protects the valuable components against damage and theft.
+ USB stick
The USB stick enables the process and positioning data to be
transferred to other PCs quickly and easily, making archiving of the
data safe and simple.
+ W-LAN antenna
All rollers operating in a team are in contact with one another via a
W-LAN antenna that is integrated in or can be attached to the machine’s
roof, enabling them to continuously exchange data on the current status
of compaction.
+ Country-specific licences for highly precise positioning data
Activating country-specific satellite correction signals enables the
accuracy of the position information to be increased to approx. 0.10 m.
Setting up a ground station on the construction site is not required.
+ Ground station
In those cases where an even higher accuracy is required but
visibility of the geostationary satellites or the reference stations on
the ground emitting correction signals is limited due to topographic
obstacles such as high-rise buildings, trees, mountains or similar, Hamm
offers a RTK ground station (RTK = Real Time Kinematic). It transmits
radio correction signals to the receiver installed on the roller which
enable the position to be determined to an =accuracy of 2.5 cm.
After completion of compaction, the data can be analysed either
on the panel PC or on any other PC using specific software. Data
transfer to a PC is performed quite simply via a USB interface.
Pertinent functions of the analysis software include:
- Production of reports: clearly structured presentation based on user-specific projects or layers; reports can be printed
- Point analysis: graphic illustration of measured data over time at an arbitrary point
- Section tool: display of measured values along an arbitrary section
- Replay feature: play compaction processes in quick motion
- Archiving of all data
The supplementary software for analysis of the data recorded by the
HCQ Navigator enables continuous documentation of the compaction
process. This is why the HCQ Navigator has been successfully used in
earthworks for many years to perform continuous compaction control.
